A new study of 4-year-old children found that just nine minutes spent watching fast-paced shows like the Nickelodeon television program SpongeBob SquarePants can cause short-term learning and attention problems, The Associated Press reports.

The study, which was published online in the journal Pediatrics, was small, researchers caution (only 60 children were involved), so the results should be taken with a grain of salt. But the findings did show that children who watched SpongeBob scored measurably worse on mental function and impulse control tests than children who either watched the slower-paced PBS program Caillou or drew pictures for nine minutes.

SpongeBob, researchers said, is not the problem per se, but it is an example of a type of fast-paced programming that has a short-term impact on children’s attention:

University of Virginia psychology professor Angeline Lillard, the lead author, said Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob” shouldn’t be singled out. She found similar problems in kids who watched other fast-paced cartoon programming.
She said parents should realize that young children are compromised in their ability to learn and use self-control immediately after watching such shows. “I wouldn’t advise watching such shows on the way to school or any time they’re expected to pay attention and learn,” she said.

A Nickelodeon spokesperson told the AP that the study was unfair because SpongeBob is made for older kids, 6-11 years old.

In a year when many school districts have experienced teacher layoffs and spending cuts, President Obama’s new jobs bill, unveiled Thursday, pays particular attention to education.

The proposal would spend $25 billion to repair and modernize school buildings, and would give $35 billion to states to prevent the layoff of 280,000 teachers across the country.

“These are the men and women charged with preparing our children for a world where the competition has never been tougher,” the president said. “But while they’re adding teachers in places like South Korea, we’re laying them off in droves. It’s unfair to our kids. It undermines their future and ours. And it has to stop. Pass this jobs bill, and put our teachers back in the classroom where they belong.”

As for school buildings, the president would put people to work repairing roofs and windows, and installing science labs and internet access. “[T]here are schools throughout this country that desperately need renovating,” he said. “How can we expect our kids to do their best in places that are literally falling apart?”

Leaders of the country’s two largest teachers unions—critics of the president in the past—liked what they heard. From the Huffington Post:

“We have for months been talking about jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs,” Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, told The Huffington Post. “We know that there needs to be a lifeline because the economy has not grown the way it should, and that is what this plan is about. It’s about putting people back to work, growing the economy, making sure how families feel stabilized.”

A woman is suing her employer because the company refused to grant her maternity leave when her twins were born through a surrogate.

Kara Krill of Long Island, New York, is suing for breach of contract and discrimination on the basis of her disability. After her first child was born in 2007, Krill was diagnosed with Asherman’s Syndrome, a condition that can cause scar tissue in the uterus and prevent a woman from carrying a pregnancy. In order to have more children, Krill and her husband used a surrogate, who carried and gave birth to twins.

Krill’s company, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, gave her 13 weeks of paid maternity leave when her first child was born. But because she was not carrying and giving birth to the twins herself, Cubist would only grant five days of leave, the amount they give parents who adopt.

Krill’s complaint argues that since she and her husband are the biological parents of their children — the couple had obtained a prebirth order, signed by a judge, confirming the “legal and genetic parentage of Krill’s twins without having to institute adoption proceedings” — she should be given the same paid maternity leave benefits as every other biological mother in the company. Were it not for her disability, she would be receiving paid maternity leave, Krill argues.

[W]hat is the real reason for granting maternity leave?

If maternity leave is offered so that women can recover from what is, at best, the incredibly messy and strenuous business of giving birth, then new mothers like Krill who use surrogates would not really deserve paid leave, since they are not doing the hard yards of labor and delivery.

But paid maternity leave could also be regarded the same way as paid leave for jury duty — something a company does out of civic responsibility. Supporting new mothers as they bond with their children, learn to care for them and give them a good start is beneficial for society and for the survival of the species.
